JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri's higher education board is opposing legislation that would change the scholarship amounts available to students at public and private colleges.
Under current law, the Access Missouri scholarship provides up to $2,150 annually to students at public universities and up to $4,600 annually for those at private schools. Supporters say those amounts cover about one-quarter of the tuition and fees at either type of institution.
Legislation backed by Gov. Jay Nixon would change that to provide a flat $2,850 to students at either public or private universities. A Senate committee hearing on the bill is scheduled for next Wednesday.
The Coordinating Board for Higher Education voted 5-1 Thursday to recommend that the scholarship levels remain unchanged.
