Miss Illinois, Megan Ervin , made her first official public speaking appearance since being crowned Miss Illinois right here in Quincy.
The local royalty returned home to speak to children at the Quincy Family YMCA Summer Day Camp on her platform, eChange: The Fight Against Childhood Obesity & Inactivity. Megan discussed with kids the importance of eating healthy and leading an active lifestyle. Since the platforms' initiation, Megan said it has evolved to include much more than obesity.
"It has morphed, so to speak, into the heptathalon of health habits," Megan said. "We have seven elements to this more holistic view of health. So of course I still have nutrition and my passion for fitness, but we are also including spirituality, recycling, reading and education, community service, and something very new, distracted driving."
Another duty that Megan will perform during her year as Miss Illinois is speaking with schools across the state on the dangers of texting and driving. As part of the distracted driving portion of her platform, she plans to take pledges from teens in various schools.
