McDonough County Sheriff's Office looking for home repair scammer

MGN Online

According to McDonough County Sheriff Rick VanBrooker, an arrest warrant has been issued for Jeffrey A. Smith.

Smith is a 50-year-old with last known address of Columbia, Missouri.

The warrant was issued after the McDonough County Sheriff’s Office received a report of home repair fraud near Good Hope on October 6th that involved asphalting a driveway.

Investigators learned that the victim was charged $9,000 for the job.

A local, reputable, business assisted the Sheriff’s Office and estimated the job should have been done for under $2,000 and that the work that was done was substandard.

Investigators also learned that the address and phone numbers provided to the victim by the scammers were phony.

Investigators believe that the asphalt scam company is based out of Hannibal, Missouri.

Sheriff VanBrooker asks if you know of Smith’s location to please contact the McDonough County Sheriff’s Office or your local authorities.

Smith also has an outstanding warrant out of Iowa for Deceptive business practices. Smith’s bond on the McDonough County warrant was set at $75,000. The investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected.

Sheriff VanBrooker strongly urges citizens to use a local, established company rather than a traveling asphalt business. All too often these traveling companies are nothing more than traveling thieves.
