Mayor of tornado-ravaged city returns to day job

The mayor of a tornado-ravaged community in central Illinois has returned to his day job at Caterpillar Inc. after getting time off to focus on recovery efforts.
The (Peoria) Journal Star reports that Gary Manier's job as mayor of Washington is meant as a part-time job. But it became a full-time one after the Nov. 17 tornado damaged or destroyed more than 1,000 homes.
Peoria-based Caterpillar gave Manier time off to deal with that devastation. And co-workers filled in for him at his Caterpillar customer service job.
Manier says Caterpillar understood what the community was going through. The tornado affected more than 300 Caterpillar employees who live in Washington.
Manier resumed working for Caterpillar in January, but often for five hours a day. He recently started working regular hours.
