Massive Beardstown fire destroys several homes, garages

The fire began around 2:30 p.m. Sunday on the 400 block of Washington St.

A massive fire damaged a Beardstown neighborhood Sunday.

Firefighters were called to the scene around 2:30 p.m. to find heavy flames taking over a handful of homes. In all, six homes were damaged, two garages were completely destroyed and several cars were gutted.

Firefighters tell KHQA the fire spread quickly due to the close proximity of the homes as well as the high winds.

"They called mutual aid from Rushville and Arensville. Both responded. They were on the scene for most of the afternoon and the evening last night," Police Chief Tom Schlueter said.

Eyewitnesses say the fire started in a shed, at a residence at 404 Washington Street, and spread to the surrounding houses, garages and cars.

Firefighters say no one was hurt, but Schlueter says one person was displaced from his home.

Investigators are still looking into what sparked this fire.
