Man hospitalized after Fort Madison shooting

The alley where police say the shooting took place.

Fort Madison police say no arrests have been made in regards to a shooting that took place there Monday afternoon.

The investigation began shortly after 3 p.m. when someone reported hearing gunshots in the area of the 1300 block between Avenue F and Avenue G.

Matthew Richards Griffiths, 25, of Fort Madison was found lying in the alley with a gunshot wound to his leg.

Residents from the neighborhood came out to help him until emergency officials arrived.

"The neighbors who came and offered aid before the rescue personnel got there was good," Chief Bruce Niggemeyer said.

Griffiths was taken by ambulance to Fort Madison Community Hospital and flown to the University of Iowa Hospital for further treatment.

Concerned parents of Lincoln School students took to Facebook Monday night to express their dismay over the fact that schools dismissed amid the shooting turmoil.

"Officers that were not on scene were patrolling the area in order to assure the safety of the students," Niggemeyer said in a statement released Tuesday. "Officers made a determination that the suspect had left the area and that the incident was not related to the school."

Niggemeyer said that anyone with information about the shooting is urged to contact the Fort Madison Police Department at 319-372-2525.

"Any help that the public can give is appreciated," Niggemeyer said.
