The final days of the old Jefferson school in Quincy are numbered.
On Saturday, demolition crews began tearing down the structure of the building including bringing down the smokestack.
It was purchased about 10 years ago by the Riverside Community Church in Quincy.
The church had hoped to move into the building and put about 300 thousand dollars into reworking the building to fit its needs.
But extensive vandalism about two years ago made that plan impossible according to Pastor Vernon Amsler.
"We didn't have enough insurance to fix it up so we had to make another decision to tear it down," Amsler said. "And this is difficult for us to tear down such a beautiful building. But the cost of remodeling it was going to cost more than tearing it down and doing something else."
Pastor Amsler says the demolition should be complete within the next 2 to 3 weeks.
The ground is up for sale right now but if the church could get some refinancing, Pastor Amsler would like to build a new church on the site.
