Stroll the streets and alleys of historic Keokuk, sampling a variety of music genres at the 7th annual Back Alley Bandfest, Friday, May 24 from 6-9 pm. (The Bullis Rutter Big Band will end at 8 pm.) Some of the bands that played last year will be back and new bands will be joining them.
The eleven bands scheduled for 2013 include: KHS Jazz Band at David & Colleen Murray's, 426 North 4th; Bullis-Rutter Big Band at Neville & Becky Crenshaw's, 524 North 3rd; Silver Streak Band, country and oldies rock, at Dick & Chris Roost's, 422 Concert; George Cate & Steve Stoner, acoustic rock & grunge, at John & Shannon Helenthal's, 116 Concert; Jesse Mazzoccoli classical guitar, at Mr. Lucky's, 6th & Blondeau; LMNOP, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s easy listening and dance music at John & Marcia Kirk's, 126 High Street; Heavy Glow, hard rock, at Darin and Andrea Reynold's, 215 High Street; A Pair of Jokers, everything from Hank to Hendricks, Keokuk Public Library, 210 N. 5th; Out on Bail, blues/blues rock at Mary Ann Rector's, 214 Fulton; Noah McNally, folk/old country at Kathrine Belmonti's, 224 High; and Andy Farnsworth, folk/open blues at Tom & Sandy Seabold's, 226 Morgan.
Hy-Vee will be selling sandwiches and soft drinks at the parking lot on 5th & Concert Street. Restrooms will be available at the Keokuk Public Library, Lucky's and on North 2nd Street between Concert & High Streets.
Music listeners are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and tips for the bands. Tips are the only source of income for the bands. The bands are all within a short walking or biking distance from each other. The Keokuk Tourism Bus will also be giving free rides from site to site. This free event is sponsored by the Keokuk Cultural and Entertainment District. Maps of the event sites will be available at each home where bands are appearing.
