Keokuk man attempts escape with squad car takeover

A Keokuk man is behind bars after trying to steal a police squad car.

It began when police stopped a car in an alley for a traffic violation. The car was carrying several people including 35 year-old Raymond Cooper.

According to the Daily Gate City, when the officer turned to deal with the traffic violation, Cooper "shot his cuffs" to the front of his body.

That's when he reportedly slipped into the front seat of the squad car and started to take off with the vehicle.

The officer struggled with Cooper to take control of the squad car when Cooper drove it into the stopped vehicle.

Now Cooper faces a host of charges, including five felonies.
