IV bag shortage helps improve local hospital efficiency
HANNIBAL, MO —
Hospitals across the nation are battling a widespread shortage in IV bags.
Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico has cut off power to major manufacturing plants.
The impact however can be felt locally.
Pharmacy Director Jessica Gilmore at Hannibal Regional Hospital says they have seen a shortage in IV bags.
Because of the shortage, it's forced the hospital to be more efficient with the supplies they have on hand.
"Hannibal Regional actually has a very positive viewpoint on how this has affected what we do around here. It has actually generated a lot of new ideas and ways for caring for the patient that are actually better than what we were doing before,” says Gilmore.
Gilmore says the FDA did issue a statement recently allowing and approving other manufactures to distribute small volumes of IV fluids.
