Iowa fertilizer plant gets state road grant

A Fertilizer plant expected to bring jobs to Southeast Iowa got a boost from the state.

Lee County was awarded a nearly $5 million grant for road upgrades at the site of the Iowa Fertilizer Company near Wever.

The company is required to match the state grant.

Construction is expected to begin in the last-fall of this year. The plant will employ about 160 people.

The Egypt-based company Orascom Construction Industries is building the plant. The project also is expected to create 2,500 construction jobs over the next three years.

The state has approved more than $110 million in tax breaks and other incentives for what would be the largest single capital investment ever in Iowa.
