Prosecutors in southeast Iowa have asked the Iowa attorney general's office to review the case of a Fort Madison police officer who fatally shot a 27-year-old man.
The Burlington Hawk Eye reports that the attorney general's office has been asked to determine whether the shooting was justified.
Ryan Swearingen of Fort Madison was fatally wounded by police officer Karl Judd on Aug. 3 during an incident at Swearingen's home. Judd has remained on paid administrative leave since the shooting.
The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation investigated the shooting and turned its findings over to the Lee County attorney's office. Details of the state investigation have not been revealed.
DCI Special Agent Rick Rahn says there's nothing usual about the request to have the attorney general's office review the case.
