Ft. Madison —
Hundreds of people turned out for a public tour of the historic Iowa State Penitentiary in Ft. Madison on Sunday.
It's been closed since Aug. 1, 2015.
This public event began at 9 a.m.
Anyone touring is being asked to bring a nonperishable item to be donated to the local food pantry.
Each tour will be guided by either a retired or current staff member who will be able to provide details regarding the operation of the 176-year-old facility.
The last tour will be offered beginning at 4:30 p.m., so it is recommended to be early.
