House Ethics panel investigating 2 congressmen

The House Ethics Committee says it is investigating two congressmen, Illinois Democrat Bobby Rush and Kentucky Republican Ed Whitfield.

The bipartisan panel acknowledged the separate inquiries on Friday in terse statements that did not say why the lawmakers were being investigated. The committee said it will announce its actions on both investigations by Nov. 10.

Whitfield said in a statement the complaint pertains to his work on behalf of animals. Whitfield's wife is a lobbyist for the Humane Society Legislative Fund.

The Chicago Sun-Times has reported that Rush was being examined for allegations about his use of campaign funds and for his handling of a $1 million grant.
