Holiday hiring a hit or miss
It's that time of the year stores everywhere begin to look for holiday help, whether it's students coming home from college or parents picking up an extra job to pay off their holiday purchases. But this year looks to be a hit or miss among stores in the Tri-State area.
Kohl's Department Store plans to hire more than 40,000 temporary part-time workers during the holiday season. That's a five percent increase from last year.
Last week, the store announced it anticipates hiring an average of 35 associates per store for the holiday season. Seasonal associates can work anywhere from a few hours to more than 20 hours per week according to the news release. Typical store jobs include unloading trucks, freight processing, stocking and cash register duties.
Hiring began this month, and most jobs will be filled by mid-November.
Best Buy is hiring for the holidays, but only half as many workers as last year.
During the 2010 holiday season, Best Buy hired 29,000 workers. This year, it's only taking in 15,000 holiday employees.
There will be opportunities for overtime for full-time workers. The company says its workers have asked for opportunities to make some overtime.
Lowes in Hannibal is looking for about 18 employees to fill for its holiday season, while its Quincy location says it's always hiring.

A JC Penney store manager in Quincy says the store will more than likely hire about 10-20 percent more employees over what was hired last year. Much of it is determined on flexibility, especially on nights and weekends.
