Even as severe storms and a tornado went through the Tri-States Monday night, our viewers were watching coverage of Oklahoma storms in horror as tornadoes mauled a two-mile-wide path of destruction and left people missing and lives lost.
If you are looking to help, two organizations that immediately come to mind are The Salvation Army and The Red Cross.
Donate through the Salvation Army by calling 1-800-SAL-ARMY or go to their website at https://donate.salvationarmyusa.org/uss/eds/aok. You can also text STORM to 80888 to contribute $10.
The Red Cross is also responding in Oklahoma. You can help on their website at http://www.redcross.org/news/press-release/Red-Cross-Statement-on-Oklahoma-Tornado. You can also call 1-800-REDCROSS or text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
If you are looking to help locally, you can also use the information above and choose to keep it local. Also, The Red Cross is always looking for blood donors.
As always, make sure you check out an organization before you give. Check to see if they are a nonprofit or tax-exempt business. If an organization brings in more than $25,000 annually, look for their Form 990 to see the charityâ??s assets according to the IRS.
Above all, play it safe. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
