Hannibal man jailed in baby scalding

      The child was in the care of Marvin L. Abbey, 20, of Hannibal.

      A Hannibal man is in jail on an assault charge after a 1-year-old child was severely burned.


      Hannibal Police Department

      was contacted by Hannibal Regional Hospital officials Sept. 7 after the infant was brought in to the hospital with second-degree burns.

      The child was in the care of Marvin L. Abbey, 20, who told investigators the baby was scalded by hot water in a bath, according to a HPD press release.

      Abbey was arrested and placed on a 24-hour hold at the Marion County Jail on a charge of endangering the welfare of a child and an outstanding Illinois warrant for possession of marijuana.

      The baby was transferred to the

      St. Louis Children's Hospital

      . Her condition was critical but stable.

      Marion County Prosecutor Tom Redington

      charged Abbey with second-degree assault.

      He remains in the Marion County Jail on a $100,000 bond. Abbey is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. Friday hearing before a Marion County judge.
