The Keokuk Police Department has identified the man killed in a motorcycle crash early Sunday morning on the Keokuk - Hamilton bridge.
The victim is Dustin Whitaker, 27, of Hamilton.
Keokuk Police Chief Tom Crew said his officers were called to the scene at about 1:45 a.m. on Sunday.
Crew said the accident happened on the Iowa side of the bridge and that Whitaker was travelling westbound on the bridge when he lost control of his motorcycle and suffered major head injuries in the accident.
Crew also said the accident investigation showed the motorcycle travelled an additional 250 feet from where the victim was found following the accident.
Prior to the release of this information, Whitaker's name made its way across social media sites. KHQA did not release it until we confirmed the information with Chief Crew.
Whitaker was a soldier in the United States Army. He'd previously served in both Iraq and Afghanistan.
