Gas leak forces Quincy Commons evacuation

A Major gas leak forced the evacuation of the Quincy Commons shopping center

Quincy police say a major gas leak forced the evacuation of the Quincy Commons shopping center early Wednesday morning.

The leak is currently contained and employees and customers are headed back into the buildings, a statement from the Quincy Police Department says.

Assistant Fire Chief James Pioch said that an electrical fire in the Delmonico's Steakhouse kitchen triggered a sprinkler system. Water from the sprinkler extinguished a pilot light causing the kitchen to fill up with natural gas.

A passerby noticed water coming from the building and contacted police.

The cause of the fire is still not known, Pioch said.

The shopping center at 36th Street and Broadway includes Hy-Vee, Panera Bread and Hobby Lobby.

Quincy police sent out notice about 5:50 a.m. The Quincy Fire Department gave the green light for people to return to the building shortly before 6:30 a.m.

The cause of the leak as not immediately released.
