A fire investigator with the state fire marshal's office is waiting for permission to investigate a weekend fire in Vermont, Ill.
An old grade school went up in flames there early Sunday morning.
The school, at 600 N. Liberty, caught fire sometime before 2:40 a.m. Fire crews from Vermont, Adair, Ipava, Table Grove and Astoria were called to the scene to contain the fire.
It took more than two hours to extinguish the blaze.
The marshal arrived Monday but has yet to receive permission from the landowner to begin the investigation, Brian Mercer, chief of the Vermont Fire Protection District said.
Firefighters said the building had been vacant for more than a decade and had no electricity.
No injuries were reported from the fire.
