Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords made a rare campaign appearance in Iowa
on behalf of U.S. Representative Bruce Braley's race for the Senate.
Giffords and her husband, retired astronaut Mark Kelly, spoke Sunday at Braley's annual "Bruce, Blues, and BBQ" fundraiser in Des Moines before about 1,200 Democrats. Giffords briefly said that she is fighting to make the world a better place.
Braley, of Waterloo, is the only Democrat running for the seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Senator Tom Harkin.
Giffords was severely wounded in a January 2011 shooting outside a Tucson, Arizona supermarket. The Democrat resigned from Congress a year later. Since the attack, Giffords has advocated for gun control legislation.
Braley has voiced support for some gun control laws, like tougher background checks for gun-buyers.
