The city of Hannibal is cracking down on the owners of a crumbling hotel.
According to the Hannibal Courier Post , the city attorney has filed a state court action against the owners of the old Maryland Hotel for maintaining a public nuisance.
This action means the california owners have to fix the front of the building, or tear it down.
The building is located next door to City Hall on Broadway.
The owners have attempted to give away the building to the city to create a parking lot.
But that offer was refused because the city had no money to tear it down itself.

The city of Hannibal has asked the owners of the old Maryland Hotel, which is next door to city hall, to start fixing the building.
The Hannibal Courier Post reports the city council asked the city attorney to draft and mail a letter to the owners who live in California.
The letter states the couple has 20 days to start making substantial repairs or the city will proceed with further action.
That next step may be legal action.
A safety fence has been built around the building after plaster started falling off the building.
