Firefighters battle Fort Madison house fire

Firefighters responded to a fully engulfed house fire in Fort Madison Sunday afternoon.

First responders were called to the 500 block of Avenue D in Fort Madison around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday.

The owners of the house were not home during the fire, but a neighbor reported it.

According to Fort Madison Fire Chief Joey Herren, the fire's point of origin was in the second story upper bedroom. The house is a total loss. Herren expects the losses equal up to $65,000 on the structure alone.

The cause of the fire is still unknown. We will update you as information becomes available to us.
