Fire investigators remain on the scene of a weekend fire that overwhelmed the Furniture Store in Fort Madison Saturday.
Capt. Scott Brisby with the Fort Madison Fire Department says crews responded to heavy smoke and flames on the second floor of the building, at 1520 Ave. G. West Point fire crews were called in for mutual aid to battle the blaze.
Brisby says it appears the fire started in one of four apartments on the second story, in the back of the building. The fire burned through most of the apartment and into the lower level where contents of the Furniture Store were heavily damaged.
All of the building's residents had safely evacuated upon the firefighters' arrival.
A state fire marshal is expected to return to the scene sometime Monday to determine a cause.
The fire struck just as the city was wrapping up its RAGBRAI celebrations, a bicycle event that brought in thousands of people to Fort Madison.
