Fire destroys Valley City, Ill. factory building

An eyewitness said the Tate Cheese building was a former factory, but he estimated it had been used primarily for storage the last 15 or 20 years.

A factory building was destroyed in a large fire Thursday night in Valley City, about a mile north of I-72 on the west bank of the Illinois River in Pike County.

According to David Greenwood of Pike County EMS, the Tate Cheese building was a total loss by 10:45 p.m.

Greenwood said he did not believe there were any injuries and that surrounding buildings only received minor damage.

According to Ross Smith, an eyewitness near the scene and resident of the area, the Tate Cheese building was a former factory, but he estimated it had been used primarily for storage the last 15 or 20 years.

Smith said he believed an area farmer had leased the property.

The first call for the fire came in around 7:40 p.m. The Griggsville Fire Department responded along with about 10 other departments, according to Greenwood.

A cause of the fire is not known at this time.

Greenwood said there had been people working in the building earlier in the day, but was unsure of the type of work being done.

Fire crews were still on scene around 10:45 p.m. but roughly half of the departments that responded had left the area by that time.
