Family of five escapes Hamilton house fire safely

Firefighters fought a Hamilton house fire that started in a basement Monday.

The Hamilton, Warsaw and Carthage Fire Departments along with Hancock County EMS and Hancock County Sheriffs Department responded to 910 East County Road 900 at 2:29 p.m.

Fire Chief Steve Helenthal said there was smoke coming from the back of the home when firefighters arrived. Crews went into the house through the outside cellar door and put out the fire, but then found that it had moved to the main level of the home. Crews quickly gained control and put out the fire.

Residents Austin and Jessica Shuman and their three children were able to escape the home without any injuries, the Hamilton Fire Department reported.

The home suffered major fire, smoke and water damage and, according to the Hamilton Fire Department, the Red Cross was there to help the family.

The Illinois State Fire Marshal is conducting an investigation. No cause of fire has been released at this time.
