      Ellie the elephant gives birth to new St. Louis attraction

      The zoo's 42-year-old Asian elephant Ellie gave birth to a "little" bundle of joy on Friday, April 26, 2013 at 10:57 p.m.


      There's a new addition to the St. Louis Zoo.


      The zoo's 42-year-old Asian elephant Ellie gave birth to a "little" bundle of joy on Friday, April 26, 2013 at 10:57 p.m.


      She weighed 251 pounds and stands 38 inches tall.



      Click here to see the baby elephant's first bath. Listen to her roar! This is the way elephant calves call to their mothers, and Ellie comes right over to her newborn.


      Whether or not it's technically "maternity leave" mother and baby are not on public display for a while. A public debut date has not been set.


      According to the St. Louis zoo website, the public may help name the baby by voting for their favorite name.
