Chocolaterie Stam brings European treat to Tri-States

The shop features a range of chocolates from white, milk, and dark.

Not that you really need a reason to eat chocolate, but today marked a special occasion.

It was National Chocolate Covered Anything Day.

You can get chocolate just about anywhere, but if you're looking for something special, it might be closer than you think.

Located in downtown Hannibal, the Chocolaterie Stam features European chocolate, and Italian gelato.

Owner Mary Glenn Bowman wasn't always in the chocolate business.

It wasn't until she stepped into a Chocolaterie Stam in 2011 that realized it was something special.

"It just hit like a ton of bricks and I thought, this is so unique, and so pretty that we need to bring this back to Hannibal, and so we did."

A family business that was started in Holland in 1913, all the chocolates are made by the great-grandson of the original founder.

"He lives in Des Moines, Iowa. I drive to Des Moines, pick them up, and bring them back, and here we are. They're very fresh chocolates, they're very unique chocolates...some people say they're too pretty to eat, but that's not true. They're beautiful, but they're certainly good to eat."

Bowman says that once you step in the store, you're sure to find something you like.

"Chocolate's just one of those things. All women love chocolate. It's just one of those things. And men are certainly finding their way around the chocolate store now too. It doesn't have to be chocolate, more than likely it will be chocolate, but there's something here for everybody."

Owners say if you're looking for a tasty Christmas gift to send out, they can ship their product as well.
