CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - Chief Illiniwek has given his farewell performance, and today the University of Illinois trustees made it official.
The board this morning voted to retire the mascot's name, regalia and image. There was one dissenting vote.
The resolution leaves the details -- such as how and when the Chief Illiniwek name and image would stop being used and licensed to apparel makers and others -- to Chancellor Richard Herman.
The school would continue to call its sports teams the Fighting Illini under the resolution.
