Carter dodges possible life sentence in murder plea

Carter shot Williams at an apartment building in the 200 block of South 11th Street.

The Quincy man charged in a January shooting death entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors Tuesday.

Vincent Carter, 45, is charged in the Jan. 3 shooting death of Terry L. Williams, 53.

Carter shot Williams at an apartment building in the 200 block of South 11th Street. The two men were involved in a dispute over rent, police said.

Carter's trial was scheduled to begin Monday.

The plea will help Carter avoid a term of 45 years to life in prison. Carter pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He was originally charged with first-degree murder. A charge of unlawful possession of a weapon was dismissed.

He now faces up to 20 years in state prison. Adams County Circuit Judge Scott Walden will hand down his sentenced Nov. 25.
