Sixty Illinois counties, including some in the KHQA viewing area, have been declared federal disaster areas by President Obama. This declaration comes as a result of February's blizzard.Earlier this month Governor Quinn asked that the counties be eligible for federal assistance after more than 21 inches were dumped on the state in many areas. His office estimates that state and local governments spent about 64 million dollars in response and recovery after the storm. This declaration means that local governments could be reimbursed up to 75 percent of their storm related expenses. The Federal Emergency Management agency announced on Thursday that the funds would cover costs that counties incurred between Jan. 31 to and Feb. 3rd.Several counties in the tri-states are included in that declaration including Adams, Brown, Pike and McDonough counties.
