Bishop will pray as Quinn signs gay marriage law

Springfield Roman Catholic Bishop Thomas John Paprocki says he will preside over a prayer service of "supplication and exorcism" on the day Gov. Pat Quinn signs Illinois' same-sex marriage law.

      reports

Paprocki on Thursday called marriage between gays and lesbians a union that "comes from the devil and should be condemned as such." Quinn is scheduled to sign the bill Wednesday. The law takes effect June 1.

Paprocki condemned Catholic politicians for "twisting the words of the pope" while arguing in favor of the law.

The pope said in August it wasn't for him to judge the sexual orientation of priests, if they are searching for God and have good will.

Paprocki said it is scandalous so many Catholic politicians enabled the passage of the legislation.
