Baby's suspicious head injuries lead to arrest

A rural Bushnell man faces battery and endangerment charges after an infant showed up at McDonough District Hospital with head injuries.

The father of the child, 37-year-old Travis S. Hammond was arrested Thursday.

McDonough County Sheriff Rick VanBrooker says that the one-year-old infant was taken to the hospital on January 16 with serious, suspicious head injuries. The baby was later taken by helicopter to OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Ill.

The Sheriff's Office detectives and the Department of Children and Family Services conducted an investigation resulting in Hammond's arrest.

Hammond is charged with aggravated battery to a child and endangering the life/health of a child.

Sheriff VanBrooker reports that Hammond was arrested in Peoria and transported to the McDonough County Jail.

Hammond appeared in court on Friday and his bond was set at $250,000 with ten percent to apply.

The baby is still a patient at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center.
