ATF helping in Fort Madison fire investigations

The Metropolitan after Saturday's fire

The recent group of fires in Fort Madison have brought up many questions.

Six fires are currently under investigation by five different agencies, one of which being the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Fort Madison Police Chief Bruce Niggemeyer says that because of the suspicions about the fires, they needed to bring in the ATF for further investigation.

Niggemeyer says the ATF will provide resources the city wouldn't normally have access to that would help the investigation.

"I know that there are a lot of folks that are worried. They are concerned and rightly so. This is a lot of fires for the city of Fort Madison," Niggemeyer said.

Police also are investigating a possible lead of surveillance footage from the night of one of the fires.

The owner of "The Furniture Store" sent in the footage saying it showed a person running away from the business at the same time of the fire.
