America's Hometown hosting summer job fair
If you are looking for ways to make some extra money over the summer and you live in America's Hometown the Hannibal Parks & Recreation Department is helping you get a leg up on your job search.
Hannibal Parks & Recreation Department is having a job fair 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28 in the City Council chambers of City Hall.
Applications will be available and staff will be on hand to answer questions about seasonal employment in the Parks & Recreation Department, Department of Public Works, Street Department and Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Hannibal Parks & Recreation applications are due March 10. Applicants must be at least 15. A variety of jobs are available, including lifeguards, concession workers, maintenance crew and sand volleyball referees.
One of the biggest needs is seasonal employees for the Hannibal Aquatic Center. There are 10 lifeguards on duty at all times.
Although the pool opens May 27, lifeguards will start training at the beginning of May, learning safety and lifesaving techniques. By the end of the training, lifeguards will be Red Cross certified.
Before taking the lifeguard course, individuals must be able to swim 300 yards continuously, tread water for 2 minutes using only legs and complete a timed event getting a brick at the bottom of the pool within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
At the end of the course, they must pass in water skills scenarios and a written test.
These jobs are good for high school students because they are seasonal and are often the first chance for a teenager to earn money and learn about work ethics.
