The Illinois Department of Transportation closed the Quincy Memorial Bridge Friday as a result of high waters.
Rick Walker with IDOT Operations says they expect the closure of the Memorial Bridge at noon Friday.
The closure diverts eastbound traffic to the Bayview Bridge. Memorial Bridge will remain closed at least a week.
Quincy Central Services director Marty Stegeman is confident that IDOT's closure will be a smooth operation.
"They've done this in the past. It will be a little more time consuming for people to get in and out of town," he said. "But it should run smoothly. They have a lot of experience in doing this."
The Quincy Police Department has received a few phone calls regarding the long lines of traffic. They are unable to solve that issue. Traffic will flow best by the use of the traffic signals.
Drivers need to be patient and those intending to use the bridge should plan extra time for travel.
As a reminder, pedestrian traffic is also prohibited on the Memorial Bridge. Please do not go past the barricades.
