Could the "Chief" get a new lease on life?
That's what some supporters of the former University of Illinois mascot Chief Illinwek are hoping.
A group of past chiefs known as the Council of Chiefs has asked the university to allow the beloved mascot to return for two campus events this year.
Under pressure from the NCAA the school stopped using the mascot in 2007 because some American Indians considered it offensive.
The school's current chancellor says she will not back the idea of the mascot's return.
But the members of a tribe in Oklahoma, who are descendants of the American Indians that once lived in Illinois, say they are willing to discuss the idea.
