URBANA, Ill. (AP) - The University of Illinois' American Indian mascot, Chief Illiniwek, no longer will perform at athletic events on the school's main campus after Wednesday - the last men's home basketball game of the season.
School officials on Friday announced the retirement of the 81-year-old mascot, who is portrayed by buckskin-clad students who dance at football and basketball games and other athletic events.
The NCAA in 2005 deemed Illiniwek an offensive use of American Indian imagery and barred the university from hosting postseason events.
